Let’s move to the streams and do some salmon fishing. We have a nice spring morning and moving down to the mouth of this stream we see that the smelt is spawning. Early in the morning like this and late in the evening is good time to fish. The spawning are going up streams at dust and back down the stream in the early morning just about an hour or two after day light. The only thing that would make this better to fish is a bad weather day, cloudy and windy. With the water being rough we could to the windward shore line and fish in the shallow water. In the conditions they will move to this spot. Here we can troll or cast different lures like streamers, spoons or spinners are often more productive near the shore. When casting retrieve the lure fast salmon like a fast moving lure and when trolling move about 4 to 5 miles per hour another trick is to hold the line and jerk the lure.
Keep an eye open for those sand bars and gravel bars. The minnows and smelt both like these spots and that draws the salmon home. With summer coming on we will have to start fishing deep trolling 30 to 150 feet in depth salmon love the water to be from 40 to 50 degrees. Check the lake you are at and see if it runs this deep if so, get that weighted lead-core or wire line ready.
